How do I set-up my Home Sleep Study?

Follow these simple steps to set-up your Home Sleep Study.

  1. Use your smartphone to download the WatchPAT app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Open the app and accept all permissions when prompted.
  3. Remove the WatchPAT ONE from the box and press the “ready” button in the app to begin a brief tour of the device.
  4. Place the included AA battery in the device. A green light will blink when WatchPAT ONE powers on.
  5. Prepare your non-dominant hand for the device by washing away hand lotion, clipping long fingernails, and taking off any rings, watches, or accessories you may be wearing.
  6. Press “next” in the app and enter your 4-digit pin number. (*Devices are set-up specifically for the purchasing patient, the device should not be used by someone else)
  7. Fasten the WatchPAT ONE strap around the wrist of your non-dominant hand, going for a comfortably snug fit.
  8. Slide the finger probe all the way onto any of your fingers (except your thumb) on your non-dominant hand. The “TOP” sticker on the probe should be directly above your fingernail. With the probe in position, hold it against a hard surface and gently remove the TOP tab. (Ignore any instructions referring to a chest sensor. Our tests use pulse oximetry finger probes to detect sleep apnea through your pulse and blood oxygen levels.)
  9. Before you sleep for the night, plug in your phone and keep it no more than 15 feet away from the WatchPAT ONE device. To avoid interference, turn off any other transmitting devices, such as cell phones, smart watches, or other bluetooth-enabled technology.
  10. Press “start” to begin your sleep study. Reminder your phone MUST be plugged in all night while testing.
  11. In the morning, press “end recording.” After a few minutes, the app will notify you when it has received all of the data from the WatchPAT ONE. You will also receive an email from GEM SLEEP when your results have been received.
  12. Once you’ve been notified, close the application and dispose of the device. You may either print a FREE return label (https://www.itamar-medical.com/greenprogram/)and ship the device back to be recycled or you can throw it away. This device is a one time use.
  13. Within 5-7 business days a GEM SLEEP provider will review your results and provide you with the outcomes of your sleep test, as well as, a treatment recommendation.

What is a Home Sleep Study?

WatchPAT is an innovative Home Sleep Test that uses sophisticated sensors to provide a comprehensive sleep test report without leaving the comfort of your own bedroom. A small wrist-mounted device, WatchPAT is easy to operate, with fast and accurate results. WatchPAT has been proven to provide equivalent results to in-lab tests.

What is my WatchPat Pin Number?

Your 4- digit WatchPat Pin NUMBER is the LAST 4 DIGITS of the phone number you used when creating your GEM SLEEP account.

I learn best by watching a video tutorial, where can I find that?

Watch this brief video which will walk you through the steps on how to complete your set-up and submit your test after just ONE night of sleep.

WatchPat Set-up Video

*Please note that the video includes a 'snoring and body position sensor', the version of WatchPAT that GEM SLEEP provides does not have this. You will still get the same lab quality results using the watch + finger pulse indicator.

How do I get the best results from my Home Sleep Study?

There is not a "right way" to sleep with a Home Sleep Study, they are meant to adapt to your different positions and sleep stages throughout the night.

However, keeping these things in mind may help:

1. Try to get a full nights sleep, that doesn't mean deep sleep all night, but try to get at least 5+ hours of sleep on the night of your study.

2. Sleep on your back (as much as possible)(for the night of your test only), apnea events typically happen more often when sleeping on your back.

3. If for any reason we do not get enough data from your test, or the results are inconclusive we will work with you to perform a retest. A retest may not be covered by insurance. Reminder the test we provided is ONE TIME USE only, it cannot be worn a second night or used by someone else.

4. Keep the device on ALL NIGHT, even if you need to get up during the night.

5. Disconnect all other bluetooth devices from your phone except for the Watch. Other connections could interfere with the signal from the study.

6. If you feel tired, please use caution when operating a car or machinery.

I am taking a HST, but already have therapy for OSA, should I wear therapy during the test?

The answer will vary depending on the reason for the test.

  1. If you are trying to validate that your current treatment is working, then you SHOULD wear your treatment during the test.
  2. If you need a new prescription or want to know your sleep apnea numbers WITHOUT treatment, then you should NOT wear your therapy the night of your home sleep study test.

Will I be required to complete a Virtual Visit?

You may be required to complete a Virtual Visit with GEM SLEEP for your Home Sleep Study or CPAP order. Virtual visits are required to be completed in some states and/or with some insurance plans. We will notify you during the checkout process if a visit is required. We do our best to offer multiple times and dates to choose from for your visit. All visits are less than 15 minutes in length.

*Please Note: If you choose to do self-pay on a Home Sleep Study and it DOES NOT require a virtual visit, it may impact your ability to use Insurance for your CPAP treatment if you are diagnosed with Sleep Apnea.

What do I do with my Home Sleep Test Device after testing?

The Home Sleep Test device is a one time use device. Once you have completed your test you have two options for disposable:

1. Recycle It! (Preferred Option): Visit https://www.itamar-medical.com/greenprogram/ to download a FREE return label and send the device back. There is NO cost to you. Simply remove the battery prior to shipment, you can even use the same box it came in, and drop it off.

2. Throw it Away. Remove the battery and dispose of it in a garbage can.

How long does it typically take for my sleep study to be reviewed once I submit it?

We want this experience to be as quick and easy as possible! Our GEM SLEEP PROVIDERS typically review submitted sleep studies within 7-10 business days from receiving. You will receive an email when your data has been submitted and will receive another email when the results are complete and ready to be reviewed.

How is the cost of my HST credited back when I purchase CPAP therapy?

The cost of your HST will be credited back to you in the form of a promotional discount when you purchase CPAP therapy from GEM SLEEP. To receive this credit, use promo code HSTBACK189 during the CPAP check-out process. This will take $189 off the CPAP Starter Bundle price, this discount is in addition to the 5% bundled price savings. Promotional discount is not valid on insurance purchases.

  • Code should be added DURING the checkout process.
Can I wear my Orthodontic treatment during my home sleep study?

Wearing orthodontic/dental treatment (that is NOT an Oral Appliance for Sleep Apnea) will not affect the results of your Home Sleep Study. Items that are okay include: mouth guard for grinding, Invisalign (or other teeth straightening device/system), retainers, etc. If you have a question about something you are using while sleeping, please contact our support team and they will be glad to help you.
