In Lab Vs at home sleep studies
Up to 30 million people in the US have sleep apnea, but only 6 million are diagnosed. Why? Because many people don’t want to take an in lab sleep study. We can understand why. Imagine having to drive (sometimes an hour or more) to a clinic just to stay overnight in an unfamiliar place, sleep in an unfamiliar bed, and have countless sensors hooked up to you, all while a person watches you sleep.
in lab sleep studies can take up to 6 months to complete and then begin treatment
- Step 1: Get a referral from your physician
- Step 2: Get into a sleep clinic for a sleep evaluation
- Step 3: Schedule your sleep study
- Step 4: Stay overnight and take your sleep study
- Step 5: Wait for your diagnosis
- Step 6: Get a prescription for a CPAP machine or other treatment
- Step 7: Contact a CPAP manufacturer and order your device
- Step 8: Wait for your CPAP machine to arrive and finally begin treatment

FAQs About at Home Sleep Apnea Testing
How Does a Sleep Apnea Test Confirm an OSA Diagnosis?
Sleep apnea can’t be diagnosed while you’re awake; it takes consistent monitoring throughout the night. At home sleep apnea testing technology is just as reliable as clinical sleep studies. These small devices measure seven different channels to help confirm an OSA diagnosis:
- Peripheral Arterial Tone (PAT) Signal: during an apnea event, the fight or flight (sympathetic) part of the nervous system is activated and blood flow in the blood vessels is decreased. The PAT signal senses this reduced blood flow and, in that way, identifies the apnea events as they occur. In addition, the PAT signal has been correlated with the stages of sleep and measures your total sleep time.
- Heart Rate: changes in heart rate also occur during an apnea event and this is identified with the PAT signal as well.
- Pulse Oximetry: evaluates your breathing and the saturation of oxygen in your blood.
- Actigraphy: tracks your body’s movements and activity throughout the night.
- Body Position: certain sleeping positions can have an aggravating effect on breathing abnormalities while you sleep.
- Snoring: heavy and loud snoring often accompanies sleep apnea.
